Karan is our first nonassociated offshore gas field development – and, indeed, the Kingdom’s – and has helped to boost Saudi Arabia’s gas production. Discovered in 2006, the Karan field has been developed to help meet the Kingdom’s demand for sales gas and industrial feedstock for water desalination and electric power generation.

The development was completed in 2012 ahead of schedule and under budget, reaching a full peak production capacity of 1.8 billion scfd.

For the Karan Program, we made efforts to improve local participation in construction and procurement. Early in the program, local design offices performed a portion of the engineering studies in preparation for the detailed design. Much of the equipment was manufactured or procured in-Kingdom, and more than half of the contractors on the construction work were local.

Another key achievement of this program is its operational safety record, including 62 million incident-free man-hours. This is a result of activities such as safety culture workshops and a zeroing down on lost-time injuries.

Consequently, we are proud to have won Integrated Oil Company of the Year as well as Gas Project of the Year for our work on the Karan Gas Project.
